In general, is it recommended that an expiration date be given for password encrypted messages?

With regards to whether or not to use a password expiration date, it depends on sender/receiver needs. In general, it is nice to keep an expiration date – to avoid unwanted data leakage in the future (e.g., in case the sender/recipient account gets compromised, etc).

encrypt with symmetric encryption
Set expiration date when sending Password encrypted emails.

You may also reuse passwords between the same recipient, but similar precautions should again be taken.
