In general, is it recommended that an expiration date be given for password encrypted messages?

With regards to whether or not to use a password expiration date, it always depends on the needs of the sender and recipient. In general, it is nice to keep an expiration date – to avoid any unwanted data leakage in the future (e.g., in case if the sender/recipient account gets compromised, etc.) You may also reuse passwords between the same recipient, but similar precautions should again be taken.
